Overview

The term and concept co-dependency is certainly not a new one, yet it remains a source of debate and confusion within the professional and recovering communities. For most people familiar with the term, it has come to represent the effect of one person's behavior on another person - usually someone with significant emotional investment with that person. Within the addictions/recovering communities it has been associated with addicts/alcoholics, their families, and significant others.

The American Psychiatric and Psychological Associations have yet to recognize co-dependency as a legitimate diagnosis or illness. In its stead, the symptoms often associated with it are designated as the primary diagnosis or disease. In its stead, the symptoms often associated with it are designated as the primary diagnosis or disease. Program participants will gain and understanding of the behavioral elements and ensuing physical and biological changes associated with co-dependency and why this understanding is tantamount to quality recovery and relapse prevention.

"The purpose of this workshop is not to define the problem, but point us in the direction of finding solutions. Not just for ourselves, but for our families, our clients, our patients and those who we touch and are touched by. Without understanding (and acknowledging) the problem, we are grasping at straws to find solutions." - Marty Lerner, Ph.D.
