For many people, residential treatment for a substance use disorder—including medically supervised detoxification and a rehab program that also addresses co-occurring mental health disorders—is the best route toward regaining and maintaining sobriety.
But sometimes, inpatient treatment is not an appealing option. The reasons may be financial or related to personal responsibilities or a combination of the two. And sometimes, a person has already completed inpatient treatment but still needs ongoing robust care.
Fortunately, whatever the reason may be that inpatient treatment might not be the right choice in a person’s journey toward lasting sobriety, there are alternatives that provide effective, evidence-based care. The Farley Center, for example, provides three outpatient programs designed to provide flexibility while still offering high-quality treatment that can lead to a sober life.
Let’s take a look at all three of The Farley Center’s outpatient programs.
Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)
A partial hospitalization program involves intensive treatment during the day while allowing participants to return to their homes in the evening. This approach ensures that a person receives personalized care at a high level while also providing the opportunity for them to stay involved with their family and other responsibilities.
This balance between treatment and daily life is often an excellent and effective approach. That is the case whether a person seeks treatment for the very first time via our PHP or engages with the program after residential treatment as a way to ensure ongoing support.
The Farley Center’s PHP is built around structure and includes therapeutic activities and counseling sessions to help equip you for your recovery journey. The treatment team works closely with each individual we serve to ensure that the program addresses their specific needs, the challenges they face, and their personal goals. We recognize that each individual’s recovery journey is uniquely their own, and we are committed to providing care that meets each person where they are and helps them get where they want to go in sobriety.
Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)
The word “intensive” is the key to understanding The Farley Center’s intensive outpatient program. While the program is less intense than residential treatment or partial hospitalization, it still provides significant support, resources, and education designed to help you launch and/or continue your recovery journey with confidence.
Meanwhile, the IOP offers quite a bit of flexibility, which means participants can often continue to work or go to school while also keeping up with their familial and other responsibilities. That balance of structure and flexibility is a perfect fit for many people.
At The Farley Center, the intensive outpatient program includes:
- Structured therapy sessions in both group and individual settings
- Psychoeducation to build understanding of substance use disorders, triggers, coping mechanisms, and relapse prevention strategies
- Family involvement including therapy sessions to address family dynamics, communication patterns, and the rebuilding of damaged relationships
- A holistic approach that includes physical, mental, and emotional well-being and includes a range of therapies and activities
- Aftercare planning to help participants transition from the program back into their daily lives with confidence—and with resources and support for their ongoing sobriety
Telehealth Virtual Intensive Outpatient Program
Advances in telehealth technology and practices mean that The Farley Center is able to provide an intensive outpatient program virtually. This means that a person participating in the program has full access to the benefits of an IOP—including a structured approach to ongoing treatment—while taking part from their home or other private setting. Care is provided by the same exceptional team of substance use disorder specialists who serve in-person IOP participants. Additionally, the program fosters a supportive online community, so those seeking treatment have access to the same sorts of peer interactions that are a powerful part of in-person programs.
